Candela’s Electric Hydrofoil Ships to Transform NEOM’s Water Transport

A Fleet of Cutting-Edge Electric Vessels to Revolutionize Sustainable Transport in Saudi Arabia’s Futuristic NEOM Development

Candela, the innovative Swedish company behind the world’s first electric hydrofoil ship, has secured a groundbreaking deal to supply its P-12 vessels to NEOM, Saudi Arabia’s ambitious sustainable city. A fleet of these advanced electric ships will soon navigate the Red Sea, marking the largest order in Candela’s history with an initial batch of eight P-12 shuttle ships.

The Candela P-12, which launched last year, is designed to revolutionize water transport by offering a zero-emission alternative to traditional ferries. Unlike conventional vessels, the P-12 is smaller, faster, and far more energy-efficient, using 80% less energy than its diesel-powered counterparts. “The P-12 is designed to create zero-emission water transport systems with significant improvements over traditional water commuting,” says Gustav Hasselskog, CEO and founder of Candela.

Set to debut in Stockholm’s public transport system in the fall of 2024, the P-12 flies above the waves on computer-guided hydrofoils, allowing for smoother and faster journeys. With a top speed of 25 knots and over two hours of endurance, it stands as the fastest and longest-range electric passenger ship to date. The ship’s digital flight control system balances the vessel 100 times per second, ensuring stability even in challenging weather conditions.

The environmental impact of Candela’s ships is equally impressive. A life cycle analysis by the KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm concluded that the P-12 emits 97.5% less CO2 over its lifetime compared to a conventional diesel vessel. The P-12’s electric C-POD motors, located underwater, are exceptionally silent and cause minimal disruption to marine life. Moreover, the hydrofoils create only a negligible wake, allowing the ships to travel faster in areas where traditional vessels would be restricted.

Gustav Hasselskog emphasizes the transformative potential of these vessels: “We’re extremely proud to provide a vessel system designed with both passengers and the environment in mind. Short waiting times, quick connections, and an enjoyable experience without taxing the environment will revolutionize how we travel on water.”

With the deployment of Candela’s P-12 ships, NEOM is poised to set a new standard for sustainable and efficient water transport, aligning with its vision of a futuristic, eco-friendly city.
