For Blancpain, translating this cosmology into mechanical form is not simply a question of complication, but of intellectual depth. With the arrival of the Fire Horse in 2026, the Manufacture presents its fifteenth interpretation of the Villeret Calendrier Chinois Traditionnel, reaffirming its unrivalled position in calendar watchmaking.
Created for collectors who value knowledge as much as rarity, this new edition stands at the apex of haute horlogerie. Limited to just 50 platinum pieces, it is both technically formidable and culturally resonant. At first glance, the watch distinguishes itself through a salmon-rose Grand Feu enamel dial, a first for Blancpain, whose warmth contrasts elegantly with the cool authority of its 45.2 mm platinum case. White gold applied numerals and leaf-shaped hands preserve the understated elegance that defines the Villeret collection.
Yet the true complexity lies beneath the surface. The Chinese calendar is a lunisolar system of remarkable intricacy. Unlike the Gregorian calendar, its months vary in length, leap months appear irregularly, and its structure integrates the twelve zodiac animals, the five elements, and the opposing forces of Yin and Yang into a continuous 60-year cycle. Displaying this system mechanically has no historical precedent.
When Blancpain first introduced the Calendrier Chinois Traditionnel in 2012, it achieved a world first: the only wristwatch capable of simultaneously displaying the complete Chinese calendar alongside the Gregorian date and moon phase. That achievement remains unique today.
At the heart of the 2026 edition beats calibre 3638, one of the most complex calendar movements ever created. Developed entirely in-house over five years, it comprises 464 components and rivals a minute repeater in complexity. Three barrels deliver an impressive seven-day power reserve, while a silicon balance spring ensures modern chronometric stability. Every movement is assembled in Blancpain’s grand complication workshop in Le Brassus, underscoring the Manufacture’s deep-rooted expertise.
Despite its complexity, the display remains remarkably legible. Dedicated indications reveal Chinese double hours, zodiac signs, lunar days and months, leap months, the elements with Yin and Yang, and the moon phase at six o’clock. The Gregorian date is shown via a blued serpentine hand, a subtle nod to 18th-century watchmaking tradition.
Setting such a sophisticated calendar could easily become cumbersome. Blancpain solves this with characteristic ingenuity. Five patented under-lug correctors, invisible when worn, allow all functions to be adjusted safely and intuitively using only a fingertip. No tools are required, and the mechanism is protected against incorrect manipulation at any time of day.
For 2026, artistry reaches its peak on the winding rotor. Crafted in 22K gold, frosted and micro-textured, it depicts a horse in full gallop, treading upon a flying swallow. This poetic composition references Tianma, the Heavenly Horse of Chinese imperial legend, symbolising speed, endurance, and unrestrained energy. A natural ruby and engraved Chinese characters for horse and fire complete the scene, transforming a functional component into a hidden work of art visible through the sapphire case back.
