The Tower is expected to rise about a kilometre into the sky and will be ready by 2020.
You’d imagine that a city that already boasts of the world’s tallest structure, the 828-metre Burj Khalifa, wouldn’t seek to best its own record. But this is Dubai – an ambitious megapolis with world-leading infrastructure facilities and a skyline to match.
Yesterday, the foundation stone was laid for the construction of The Tower – a joint venture between Dubai Holding and Emaar Properties. It will be located in Dubai Creek Harbour and the construction plans also include developing the area around it into a buzzing commercial and residential area that will be four times as large as Downtown Dubai built around the Burj Khalifa.

The expected cost of The Tower will be approximately $1 billion and construction will finish by 2020. The final height hasn’t been disclosed yet, but given that Saudi Arabia has already commenced construction on the Jeddah Tower that is aiming to reach a height of 1,000metres, this tower in Dubai will likely surpass that height.
Designed by Spanish-Swiss architects Santiago Calatrava Valls, the building is inspired by a lily and is designed to recall the image of a minaret. The structure will house a niche hotel, high-end F&B concepts and observation decks too.
